Seminal UK industrial rockers Pitchshifter are back after an "indefinite hiatus", and these three secretly recorded tracks by the band clearly show they are still relevant and kicking ass. This EP was given to fans with the purchase of a ticket to their "Back From The Dead" tour in March 2006. It is extremely rare and out of print, so don't go looking for it at your local record store. Most likely you will have to track it down online somehow.
The first track, "Burning (Out Of Control)" is a politically charged rocker that starts the EP off with a bang. The guitars sound huge and immediately set the tone for the rest of the record. I particularly enjoyed the lyrics on this track, which reflect the current war on terror, consumerism and corporate greed ("Have you ever even wondered what we're fighting for?").
The second track, "Does It Really Matter?" is a bit more of a rocker than the first, with some nice break beats and heavy guitar riffage. The vocals on this track are more melodic and have a touch of punk/emo influence. Of the three original songs on this EP, I think this one is the weakest. That being said, it is still a great track and fits in nicely with the other two songs.
The third original track on the EP, "Predisposed (To Sickness)" is a reworking of "Predisposed" by super group This Is Menace. This track is clearly heavier than the previous two, with some serious guitar shredding and drums that made the hair on the back of my neck stand at attention. The vocals are also nice and distorted, helping to give this track more of ahard-core sound. This is my kind of industrial metal track.
The final three tracks are some solid remixes by Rick Powell, Ma Saski, and Pitchshifter collaborators Drawbacks. These remixes are well produced, and would fit in perfectly in any club set with their emphasis on cool electro sounds and bangin' beats.
This EP is a very cool listen, and though short, it defiantly is sweet. If this EP is any indication of what the future holds for Pitchshifter, then fans should be very satisfied when their next full length drops in 2009. (James Chapple)
