[non-industrial] Johnny Marples - The Nu Signs EP
Johnny Marples - The Nu Signs EP
Rating: 4

All the compositions are quite short but sound solid. They are rather loosely based on the traditional verse-chorus-verse concept, as if Johnny Marples didn't like routine. There's raw power which will touch those of you who have a revolting spirit and love for hardcore music. Songs are structured in a complex and knotty way, so they require responsive ears and brains.

'Hey Alice' by Kevon Carter is an easy-listening, rhythmic song where the accent is put on building a memorable melody. The composition follows classic rules.

Unending Hearts contains a track-list that includes 4 brand new, high-energy and professionally composed songs featuring "Ghost" as the opening of the EP. The first thing you may notice when listening to the track is how rhythmic and compelling it sounds. You may find segments somewhat reminiscent of Megadeth, Testament as well as Ministry in the substance of "Ghost" thanks to low, edgy, looped guitar riffs that are mixed with slightly more contrast due to being created by very passionate and skilled guitar player.

In Australia, where the band comes from, seasonal wildfires are hard to control. And such is Larry Leadfoot's music on their debut EP - once ignited, the musicians try to suppress the flames through dousing them with more fuel. The audible influences stretch between djent, prog, death metal, and grindcore, since the musicians are fans of Strapping Young Lad, Meshuggah, Mr. Bungle, Death, King Diamond, Slayer, and John Zorn amongst many other established names. Tension and thrills are dominant in most of the five songs present on this EP - expect a lot of excitement. Hellxotica was mixed and mastered by Jocke Skog who is best known for his involvement with Clawfinger.

If you're looking for a tune which a commercial radio station may not play, then melodic DIRT album is what you need. And here's exactly what Joe is winning you over with - not virtuosity but originality, because not many of you will be able to admit that they'd heard identical tunes before.

Merrin - Sin
Rating: 5

When it comes to arrangements, it seems they were written with a classical rock'n'blues structure in mind. Verses and choruses are easy enough to remember from the first listening for a proper sing-along with the vocalist. This obviously makes 'Sin' accessible for the majority of listeners around the world and definitely makes it fun during live performances.

The timbre of the vocals is very interesting, since they sound quite 'androgynous' - the voice could belong to either a woman or a young man, and it’s hard to say before you have a look at the band’s line-up. It's rebellious, confident, and distinctive - it can tap into higher notes easily but it mostly keeps a lower, almost masculine tone somewhere in the middle. Its range intrigues as well. To satisfy your curiosity, the person behind the voice - Charlie Phillips - is female.

Moon Pigeon - So Far

The song's mood feels melancholic - it brings feelings of loss, passing of time, letting go, self-realization. Thus, even if the theme is not necessarily related to love or passion, it'd still match a variety of emotionally touching, creative ideas.

NeverWhas - History

The composition as well as the arrangements sound solid, simple, understandable and can be played in most locations without stirring bad blood. Along with quite rebellious moods, NeverWhas provides over six minutes of both rock and punk music.

The song could be easily utilized in a movie, as it has a powerful, expressive, and a somewhat dramatic sound, while it’s very memorable as well. The repetitions don’t sound monotone thanks to a variety of interesting peaks within the instrumental lines. One could probably find musical similarities to the likes of Tool, Devin Townsend, Testament or Disturbed, to mention a few.

Undoubtedly, the band’s songwriting is their forte. Take "Hell Within Your Heart" for instance, which has serious hit potential. It's a beautiful and powerful track thanks to a mixture of catchy hard rock and modern alt-rock arrangements.

Paper Dolls - Quietly Killed

The song is built upon repetitive and simplified arrangements and falls into a Punk genre definition. However, there's some duality in Paper Dolls’ music. The seemingly airy, chaotic and hallucinatory mood of the song results from solid calculation.

This is a traditional sounding blues song; the vocals are soothing and match the composition and the song’s positive mood. The musicians seem to be sharing the same level of discipline, giving them strength in their performance.
